A Soldier's Creed
About the Author
Ronald G. Dickey enlisted in the Unites States Marines at age 18. At age 19 he was inducted into the United States Marines at a Swearing in Ceremony at an induction centerat Fort Des Moines, Iowa.
He served his basic training in San Diego, California. Upon completion of basic training he left immediately for Camp Pendleton, California, for ITR. (Infantry Training Reserve). After a 20 day leave, he was shipped to Viet Nam.
He served in combat in: Con Tien, Dong Ha, Quang Tri, and Khe Sahn.
Khe Sahn being the most difficult location during his tour of duty. Upon his return from Viet Nam. He was transferred to Camp Pendleton, here he served 2 years.
He had a difficult time adapting to civilian life. He then re-enlisted
in the Marines as Corporal. He took a Duty Station in Japan. There he was promoted to Sargent. He was discharged after a total of 6 years
He had a very difficult time with PTSD. Was treated at The Veteran?s Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. It is through his writing of poetry, along with therapy from the Veteran?s Hospital, that he was able to control his demons. It is his sincere hope that these poems will help his fellow soldiers.
He was employed by the City of Des Moines until his retirement in 2008,
Ron is retired, lives in Des Moines with his wife, Sheryl, his children and grandchildren. He enjoys gardening and spend in time with his family and friends.
